ASR Contemporary

Santo Domingo Dominican Republic
2016

This is his most recent production that he exhibits at Galería ASR Contemporáneo, and is in that same line of development of the spiritual experience. Experimental research where the decisive factor of his practice lies in the strong visual presence of color, shape, movement, space and light, elements that connect with the essence of the inaccessible and eternal.

In these works, Varela creates systems, universes, structures, multiple intertwinings that recall the genetic structure of the universe where the ovoid, circular shape and its empty space of presence are the pretext to create a dialogue with philosophical and spiritual systems.

The language of abstraction that has accompanied Varela throughout his artistic production is difficult to pigeonhole into a specific category because its leitmotif has been experimentation, an itinerary of searches that has transformed his language and projected it toward different aesthetic and conceptual problems.

In this corpus of abstract work, he has dispensed with the vocabulary of symbols, calligraphy, and signs, delving into a new dynamic that explores the possibilities of movement, virtuality, and optical effects.

If we can understand the pictorial gesture as the way in which the painter leaves his record and mark on the surface, whatever the support, in the case of this new production by Varela we observe that the gesture is now inspired by a geometric motif, a small cut-out paper, a pre-existing collage that he appropriates to develop his formal elaborations where it is possible to perceive the expression of a spiritual, philosophical dialogue between his interior and the external, between the visible and the invisible, between the conscious and the unconscious.
